Club Sandwich 24

LISTEN TO WHAT THE FANS SAID

A WORD FROM PAUL

I would like to thank all the people who wrote to us about the tribute to John in our last issue of Club Sandwich. Thank you all for your kind thoughts. Life goes on. All the best.
Paul

P.S. My birthday this year is 18.6.1981. If you turn this upside down you will see that it reads the same. This is the last time you will be able to do this in this century or next. For this bit of useless information we are indebted to George Martin.

• Dear Sue,
I was profoundly touched by the last issue of Club Sandwich and as one among a million members, I'd like to express my deep thanks to Paul and Linda. The photographs were the most beautiful and rare portraits of John Lennon that I have ever seen. The different moods captured in each different shot took my breath away - and by saying this, I hope I don't sound too dramatic.
Unlike other so-called 'tributes' that have been dominating every money-grabbing magazine capitalising on John Lennon's death, this collection was obviously sincere, and it truly captured the spirit of this great and greatly-loved man.
Paul's simple, touching paragraph of words at the end brought a lump to my throat. He voiced, I'm sure, the regards of all John's close friends and family. I only hope that some of them have actually received or learnt of this tribute.
I hope Paul and Linda hear of our greatly appreciated thanks for lessening the grief over John Lennon's death, and leaving us ail with a lingering admiration and love for him that will linger forever.
I give my thanks also for the most just tribute that I've so far seen of the man that promoted peace.
            Love,
            YVONNE BRISTOW

• Dear Paul, Linda and Sue,
Thank you for a sadly peaceful Club Sandwich special edition. John devoted himself for one basic cause: PEACE. In the late sixties he was leading anti-war demonstrations, as well as bed-ins for peace. He was able to influence a whole generation. John, almost single-handedly, changed the lifestyle of that generation. If it weren't for him, there would be no Beatles; who forever changed the face of popular music. John once said in the David Wigg interviews (The Beatles Tapes): 'I'd like to live to ripe old age.' In the same interview he told Wigg that he wanted to be remembered as 'a great peace nic', before remembering his musical accomplishments. On his last album Double Fantasy on the song Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy), John sings to his 5-year-old son Sean:

'I can hardly wait
To see you come of age
But I guess we'll both
Just have to be patient
It's a long way to go.'

What a tragedy! He was ahead of his time, and died before his time. He was a victim of an insane violent act of aggression. As he put it in the song Isolation as if he was addressing his assassin:

'I don't expect you to understand
After you caused so much pain
But then again you're not to blame
You're just a human, a victim of the insane.'

John's loss was a personal loss. I feel I have lost part of myself; part of my youth. John Winston O'Boogie Lennon will forever live in my heart.
            May God bless his soul.

• Dear Sue,
I would just like to say that I think the last issue of Club Sandwich, 'JOHN', is beautiful! Linda's photos are too lovely for words. She captured many moods of the artist at work and leisure. I especially like the photo of John and Paul in front of the Abbey Road Studios. But what really touched me was what Paul had to say on the last page.
I would like to thank Paul and Linda for putting together what I think was the best Club Sandwich issue yet.
            Sincerely,
            HELENE SALVADORE

• Dear Paul and Linda,
I was extremely touched by this issue of Club Sandwich. Linda, the photographs which you took of John were so beautiful that I cried. Did you ever think that one day those photos would be used as an 'in memoriam' - how sad - and such a waste of a good man. I loved him, and his loss has left a very large cavity in my soul which no one else could fill.
Paul, anyone who ever doubted your feelings for John all these years since the 'break-up', need only look at this Club Sandwich. You went through a hell of a lot together. After so many years of incredible closeness, no rift could last forever. I believe that you couldn't stop loving John any more than many of us could stop loving you. As a 'Beatle veteran' of 17 years, I could never stop loving four men who gave me so much and touched my soul and heart so deeply, that their effect will be forever embedded there — just as I don't think YOU could stop loving someone who you've shared so much with.
Thank you again for that beautifully simple tribute to John. I hope he can see it from wherever he is. I hope he can feel the love — if he can, I know he must be smiling.
            I love you,

• Dear Club Sandwich,
Thank you for a beautiful dedication to John Lennon that I will always cherish. A special thanks to Linda for her candid, surprising photos that truly capture John's spirit and warmth better than any I've seen. Paul, I know you must be suffering, as are all those who feel his loss, and my heart goes out to him. Thank you for this special memory of a man who will be sadly missed, and for your genuine love that inspired it.
            With love,

• Dear Paul,
I just had to write and say 'thank-you' - What For? Well thank you for Rockshow. I went to the premiere on Wednesday and it was the most fantastic night. Seeing you was wonderful in itself but the film as well was magnificent for any fan of the greatest group around. The atmosphere in the theatre was at the same time electric with excitement and warm and friendly as people with a common interest chatted to each other swapping memories and emotions. As someone who has been a fan from the age of 10 - I'm now 28 - this was a high spot which I shall never forget.
            Lots of love,

• Dear Sue,
I am just scribbling a quick note to thank you for the invitation to the premiere of Rockshow. It was a fantastic experience. Whether by coincidence or design the person I was sitting next to was a boy Wings Fun Club member who was on the same Liverpool to London train, in the same compartment as myself. We were able to talk before the film and we have attended the same Liverpool concerts.
When the screams went up, we both rushed to the far end of the stalls. Looking up we could see the circle and it was great to be able to see Paul and Linda in full view as they made for their seats. It was really fantastic. The film was a very enjoyable experience and I hope to see it again if it gets this far north!
            Cheers for now.

• Dear Sue,
I am just writing this letter to thank you for the information about where I could get a copy of the McCartney Interview. Well I was lucky enough to be able to come across one in a small record shop which only had one left.
This LP is excellent and I am very glad I wrote and asked for information. The interview has excellent sound, one can even hear Paul making a quick cup of tea. Many compliments to Paul who provided me (and probably many people) with 45 minutes of absolute pleasure. It provided me with lots of information which I wouldn't otherwise have known. It is much better hearing Paul talking ratherthan reading about it all the time.
            Compliments to Paul.
