SUE’S LETTER

In the last Club Sandwich I wrote that The Beatles Anthology TV series was "most anxiously awaited by all". This turned out to be the understatement of the century, for the events of this autumn have been quite fantastic, the likes of which we haven't seen in a very long time, and few could have anticipated the full extent of the media madness surrounding the series and its four subjects.
Almost every day, for week after week, stories relating to the Anthology have been filling most of the British newspapers and those around the world. Writing this Sue's Letter a fortnight before the premiere, I can't help wonder where it will all end and whether, as so many are predicting, the Beatles will be back at number one this Christmas with their first new single for 25 years, the gorgeous 'Free As A Bird'. What an incredible sight that would make.
We promised that this winter issue of Club Sandwich would be worth the wait, and hope you agree as we present an exclusive interview with Paul McCartney, in which he talks in depth about The Beatles Anthology. Paul recently invited two people familiar to all Sandwich readers - his publicist Geoff Baker and our editor Mark Lewisohn, both of whom have been closely involved in the Anthology - to chat with him about the project, and you can read the result in a sequence of pages starting opposite.
And we certainly cannot overlook Linda's contribution to The Beatles Anthology: her fabulous photographs of Paul, George and Ringo, taken this summer amid total secrecy. Those of you who have kept tabs on the Anthology media blitz will have seen one or two of the pictures already but we proudly present several of them, together for the first time, here in this Club Sandwich. (We have a feeling that this may turn out to be one of the most-sought after issues of CS ever.)
Of course, The Beatles Anthology is more than a TV series. It is also three very exciting double CDs of previously unreleased Beatles recordings, the first of which, Volume 1, is now in the stores. Next year will see the issue of the second and third volumes, 'Real Love' as a single, some Anthology books and the entire TV series in greatly extended form for the home-video market.
Considering all this, it is amazing that Paul has also found the time to pursue endeavours unrelated to the Anthology in recent weeks. He has twice been on stage in London - joining Allen Ginsberg at a poetry recital at the Royal Albert Hall, and then, in Prince Consort Road, having the prestigious Royal College of Music Fellowship conferred upon him by HRH The Prince of Wales. As the first 'pop' composer to receive this honour, Paul joins the illustrious company of Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Vaughan Williams, Benjamin Britten and Gustav Hoist. I shouldn't forget to mention, too, that Paul and Linda stepped out at the London Film Festival for the premiere of Grateful Dead - A Photofilm, which we previewed in the last CS.
The McCartneys' concern for children caught up in war means that, for 1996, Linda has again devoted her calendar to War Child, the charity that started out aiming to assist children embroiled in the Bosnian conflict but has expanded to embrace the young victims of wars everywhere. For details of how to order a copy of this beautiful calendar see the Club Offers sheet.
With a seasonal contribution to our column AND IN THE GREEN CORNER, journalist Andrew Martin ponders on the wretched life of the turkey, set to dominate the plates of millions of people on Christmas Day. An assignment for The Independent newspaper last year provided this meat-eating writer with considerable food for thought, leading him to question the ethics of his diet. Any of you with similar doubts need only dip into Linda's Kitchen for many mouthwatering, cruelty-free alternatives, while those who are already confirmed, committed vegetarians can apply to us for a free pack of badges, designed by Paul to help spread the good i.d.e.a.
I'll leave you with another worthy note: if you would like to receive the souvenir brochure marking next month's grand opening of LIPA, it can be obtained by sending a donation. (See details elsewhere in this issue.) This will not only help a most laudable project but may get you a copy signed by Paul. Can't be bad!
That's all for now. It only remains for me to say that we here at Club Sandwich send HAPPY HOLIDAY GREETINGS to all readers and very best wishes for A HAPPY AND PEACEFUL 1996.

'til next year
Sue

"I'll conclude with a ballad, with an accompanist. Will the accompanist please come on stage - Paul McCartney."
