‘WELL, IT WAS TWENTY YEARS AGO TODAY…’

            17th July:
            Yellow Submarine
cartoon premiere in London, attended by all the Beatles.

            30th August:
'Hey Jude'/'Revolution' released. The first single on the Apple label, it amazes listeners with its seven-minute length and prolonged fade-out. (Apparently on CD you can hear a Lennon swear-word during the 'na na na na's.) 'Hey Jude' began life as 'Hey Jules', addressed to Julian Lennon. It has often topped polls as the best single of all time. 'Those Were The Days'/'Turn Turn Turn' by Mary Hopkin issued as Apple 2 on the same day as 'Hey Jude', which it later replaces at number one. Both sides are traditional folk songs (the A-side from Eastern Europe) chosen and produced by Paul. Mary recently recorded with George Martin for his Under Milk Wood project.

            6th September:
'Thingumybob'/'Yellow Submarine' by the John Foster Black Dyke Mills Band issued as Apple 4. (The John Foster company are the band's sponsors.) After producer Paul had tried recording in the Victoria Hall, Saltaire, Yorkshire, the session continued outside in the square. Paul was to use the band again on 'Winter Rose/Love Awake' for Wings' Back To The Egg album.

            8th September:
Beatles shown performing 'Hey Jude' on David Frost's Frost on Sunday TV show. Their spot was recorded earlier in front of a small audience of fans.

            14th September:
The Beatles - The Authorized Biography
by Hunter Davies published.

AND TEN YEARS AGO…

            15th September:
            'London Town' single released.

Paul seeks new Wings to replace Joe English and Jimmy McCulloch.
