SUE'S LETTER

As Paul and the band are working in the studio on their new album it seems a good time for Sandwich to look back over various aspects of their careers.
First of all, we are at last able to come to grips with some of the mysterious pcrsonae which have been lurking in Paul's past, as he blows his cover in an exclusive talk with Mark Lewisohn (see THE OTHER ME). Then Hamish reminisces about ten favourite gigs from his varied career.
Richard Ogden gives an insider's view of the US premiere of the Liverpool Oratorio at Carnegie Hall last November while Geoff Baker looks to all the razzamatazz building up for Paul's birthday.
In January it was announced that Paul was the first recipient of a new Nobel-style prize, The Royal Swedish Academy of Music's POLAR MUSIC PRIZE, which was awarded to Paul for "his creativity and imagination as a composer and artist which has revitalised popular music over the last 30 years".
The prize money will be divided between two charitable projects Paul is supporting: the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA), which is being established at Paul's old school, and a scheme which is creating a new health facility in his local town.
Updating our article in CS60 on LIPA, the latest news is that Paul, Linda and the Performing Right Society in London hosted a special fund-raising lunch on Friday 21 February to appeal to the leaders of Britain's music publishing industry to support the launch of this much-needed school for the performing arts. We'll continue to fill you in on this exciting project as it unfolds.
Another award which Paul added to his collection came for the World Tour TV film From Rio To Liverpool - Going Home, which won this year's ACE (Awards for Cable Entertainment) honour for "Best Special Program" in the USA.
In the interim, before the new album's release, a song written by Paul McCartney, Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman called 'Don't Break the Promises' will appear on the forthcoming 10cc reunion album Meanwhile. Look out for its release on Polydor in May.

' til next time
Sue

P.S. The happy hippies below are seen in their best gear greeting Eddie Murphy on his recent visit to the studio!
