LISTEN TO ME

The centrepoint of this year's Buddy Holly Week is a fascinating MPL compilation of his most memorable songs as recorded hy other artists.

Another year passes and another Buddy Holly Week comes rolling joyfully around. Still showing absolutely no signs of weariness, the event is well into the pimpled teenage stage: 16 years.
The 1992 Week was marked by the, 7 September release of Buddy's Buddys, a newly compiled album of Holly cover versions from the archives, masterminded - as usual - by MPL's music publishing guru Alan Crowder, and issued by specialist collectors' label Connoisseur Collection. The album was officially launched with a London lunch party two days later.
Alan's heroic efforts have ensured not only that 25 tracks are shoe-horned onto the single CD (it's also available as a cassette) but that it's also selling at mid-price, which means somewhere around Ј8.99. Featured artists include Blondie (a great ‘I'm Gonna Love You Too' from their multi-platinum LP Parallel Lines), Waylon Jennings, Blind Faith, Don McLean, Paul Anka, Humble Pie, the Searchers, the Hollies, the Everly Brothers, Marty Wilde, Bo Diddley, Leo Sayer, a trio of Bobbys: Darin, Vee and Fuller, and many others. The Crickets are represented musically and in the form of sleevenotes from Joe B Mauldin and Jerry Allison,
As for the rest of the sleeve, the much admired rock artist David Oxtoby was invited to contribute a new Holly portrait, and his resulting canvas was considered so impressive that it was bought by MPL and can now be seen hanging on Mr Crowder's office wall.
