THE MACS AND THE SIMPSONS

Paul and Linda turned up in a recent edition of the popular US cartoon series The Simpsons Club Sandwich 76

What do you do when you decide to stop eating animals and your parents and family ridicule you for it? What do you do when your classmates - and even your teachers - condemn your new veggieness as seditionary and mock your morality as cranky, weird and crazy?
You could call for the cavalry, or Superman, or - as The Simpsons did -you could call for the Super Veggies, aka Paul and Linda McCartney.
Paul and Linda made their bow in the world-watched cartoon series this autumn when they were written into the script as the defenders of Lisa Simpson. In an hilarious episode - with a serious message - little Lisa ran away from home, confused and upset, after changing her diet had caused the world to treat her like a leper. That's a scenario familiar to many of us - you go veggie and all of a sudden your family and friends think there's an alien sitting down to dinner.
Which, of course, is rot. And that's why The Simpsons asked Paul and Linda to guest star and put the placid case for vegetarianism, console Lisa that she's not alone and make the important point that going veggie doesn't mean you have to alienate others - kindness and good example make much better converters.
As Homer Simpson says, "Rock stars. Is there anything they don't know?"

LINDA'S CALENDAR FOR 1996

For the second year in succession Linda has produced a calendar in aid of the charity War Child. Buy one, enjoy a colourful twelve months and do a good cause a great favour Club Sandwich 76

It's painful to be pessimistic but, although it's a relatively new organisation, War Child is one of those charities whose work will never be done. While, for most of us, thoughts at this time of the year turn to peace and goodwill, there will forever be places in the world where do-badders are sowing the seeds of hatred, disharmony and murder. And, inevitably, there are always children, innocent young people, whose lives are either taken, injured or psychologically destroyed by mankind's inhumanity to man.
War Child was established to bring some comfort to children caught up in the horrific Bosnian conflict, to alleviate the dreadful depravity caused by a war positively not of their making and which they probably fail to understand. Now War Child has extended its scope to other battle zones in the world ... and, let's face it, there are always a few wars going on somewhere on this troubled planet.
Of the thousands of laudable charities in the world, Linda chose War Child as the focus for her 1995 calendar, and has done so again this year. The McCartneys have also supported it by taking part in an art exhibition in London, and through Paul's appearance on the Help charity album, featured in the Autumn Club Sandwich.
Last year Linda's calendar was monochrome, spiral-bound and small, for desktop display. The 1996 version is the complete opposite: it's full colour and very large (385 x 345mm), perfect for wall-hanging. Environmentally it's right-on too, printed on chlorine-free matt art paper with 50 per cent recycled content.
Linda McCartney's 1996 Calendar In Aid Of War Child
is available by mail order only, exclusively to Fun Club members through the latest Offers Sheet. Those who do not want a calendar but wish simply to send a donation to War Child are always free to do so; the address is 7/12 Greenland Street, London NW1 OND, England.

LIPA TO LAUNCH IN JANUARY

here's how to obtain a souvenir brochure
...and be in with a chance of having it signed by Paul

Seven years in the pipeline, Paul McCartney's scheme to invest in the show business talent residing inside and outside Liverpool is about to reach fruition. For on Tuesday 30 January 1996 a ribbon will be snipped, and LIPA, the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, will be officially launched and open for tuition. It's going to be an emotional moment for many.
To commemorate the momentous day, LIPA is producing a fine souvenir brochure, and, exclusive to Club Sandwich, two CS readers who send away for a copy will find that theirs has been signed by Paul.
To obtain the brochure send LIPA (now a registered charity) a donation of no less than Ј7.50, a price which covers the cost of its printing and production. Within the UK send a crossed cheque or crossed postal order; outside the UK send a Eurocheque in Sterling or a cheque for $15 drawn on a US bank account. Make all cheques payable to LIPA. Credit card transactions cannot be accepted. Please note that the brochures will not be mailed until close to 30 January.
Send your donation, together with your name and address printed in block capitals, to LIPA Brochure (Dept CS), Mount Street, Liverpool LI 9HS, England.
